About this property

Welcome to The Old Hall Hotel

Set in a historic 16th-century building dating back to 1573, The Old Hall Hotel offers a traditional atmosphere with a mix of smart bedrooms and a well-regarded restaurant and wine bar. While the architecture and heritage provide character, some areas of the property show signs of wear, as reflected in guest reviews noting occasional maintenance and cleanliness issues, particularly in bathrooms and public spaces.

The hotel provides a range of amenities including free Wi-Fi, air conditioning, accessible facilities, and is pet-friendly, catering well to families and travelers seeking convenience in a central location. Although there is no on-site parking or fitness center, the availability of room service, a kid-friendly environment, and a smoke-free policy contribute to a comfortable stay for many guests.

Located on The Square in Buxton, the property is just steps from key attractions such as the Buxton Opera House and Pavilion Gardens, making it a practical choice for visitors attending events or exploring the town. Nearby natural sites including the Peak District National Park, Mam Tor, and Poole's Cavern offer outdoor opportunities within easy reach.

Reviewer feedback highlights a generally positive dining experience, with several guests praising the quality and taste of food served in the restaurant. However, opinions about service and ambiance are mixed, with some guests finding staff welcoming and helpful, while others have experienced disinterested or slow service. Overall, the hotel appeals to visitors valuing historic charm and location, but those seeking modern luxury or flawless service might consider other options.

We plumped for a four-poster room that was spacious, decently appointed, but somewhat tired, with the bathroom in particular not seeming to have been cleaned with any real effort or conviction since the long-haired brunette who had clearly stayed before us. On the plus side, the large double bed was remarkably comfortable. The first experience was with a rather curt and disinterested bearded gentleman on reception, but redeemingly his reception colleagues elsewhere during our stay were polite and cheerful. The bar was cosy and welcoming albeit a tad expensive, with the late-night bar girl pleasant and chatty. Breakfast was a self-service affair, although the food was hot, fresh and tasty. The breakfast waiter was remarkably, politely and pleasingly exuberant.

My daughter and I spent a wonderful day here at the Buxton Crescent spa for my birthday. It was a great experience. The staff were brilliant and made us feel very welcome. The pools and saunas were lovely and everywhere was spotlessly clean. The lunch we had was delicious. We both had the Indian head massage treatments. Very relaxing and very chilled afterwards. Would definitely do this again.

Had a great stay here, the food in particular was brilliant and the restaurant is a gem for a 3 star hotel. Really friendly and helpful staff Location was brilliant, just across the road from the Opera House

Stayed here numerous times but was disappointed on our latest visit. The main restaurant was closed, could eat next door hotel, reception staff seemed disinterested and not particularly helpful. Breakfast tables were left with dirty plates. Had a drink in the bar and was charged £8.75 for a pint of beer and packet of crisps. No wonder I was the only one in. Always loved this hotel but something has changed for the worse.

I have only eaten at the old Hall, I haven’t stayed there, but I have to praise the food! Such good quality, generous portions, a really good choice. A daily special,s board is there every day. Good quality traditional menu. but made with skill. Lovely hot freshly prepared food, I strongly suggest it is the best food in Buxton.

Just returned from Old Hall 2 day stay. Excellent staff, food, location and parking. It has lots of history, and don't expect straight walls and floors. It is one of the oldest Hotels in England. Bedroom was comfortable and clean, but more dusting required. .. skirting boards and lighting. !! Would definitely go back. Evening meal was excellent. 2 courses £20 or 3 for £25. Portions small ( to be expected for the price). Just order extras. !.

Beautiful hotel from the outside. But the immediate entrance, outside the rotating door, was dirty and shabby. No receptionist available when we arrived, so we went for a walk prior to booking in. The overall impression of the hotel was that it needed a lot of work as it was very tired throughout. A pot of tea in the bar, in the afternoon was 'only' £4.00. We booked for dinner at 7.15pm. The service was very poor, extremely slow and we were forgotten on more than one occasion. We finally got out of the dining room at about 9.45pm. It wasn't busy, with only five couples in to dine. On the plus side, the room was clean and the bed very comfy. A good quiet night's sleep. Also, great location. Opposite the Pavilion Park, great view of the Opera House and very near the Crescent and old pump house. The food was really good, fresh and well cooked. We would go back but Champneys, you need to bring this hotel up to scratch, get enough staff and properly train them

A lovely hotel in the heart of Buxton perfectly placed if you need to stay over with watching a show at the Opera house. Lovely, helpful staff, clean comfortable rooms and beautiful food. Niggles... Breakfast was on the cold side (especially the beans), chairs in the restaurant were old, wobbly and had lost their padding making them uncomfortable. Very minor issues... A great hotel choice in Buxton.
